Triggering the Smartphone Camera Remotely

There are times when you want to take a group photo, a self-portrait or a low-light photo with your smartphone. Several ways to trigger a smartphone to take a photo without actually touching it are available to us. Below are three such options.

Use a Bluetooth Remote Shutter Device

I purchased a remote shutter device that connects via Bluetooth to my phone. Once connected, I am able to go 20+ feet away from my smartphone and still take a photo. With a friend’s help, we determined you can even be in another room and still take a photo.

Use Wired or Bluetooth Earbuds

For most Smartphones today, the volume controls on a pair of earbuds can be used to remotely trigger your smartphone camera. I have tested this on my Google Pixel 4, my husband’s iPhone 8 and a friend’s Samsung Galaxy and it works perfectly. The main draw back is with wired earbuds, your distance from the smartphone is far less that Bluetooth earbuds.

For wired earbuds, only the ones with the in-line volume controls will work. There are so many different options available on Amazon for both wired and Bluetooth earbuds you will need to research which ones work with your phone.

Set the Timer

If the first two options are not possible…the built in timer may be the way to go. All smartphones have a timer option for taking photos hands-free.

Of course, to use any of these options, the smartphone needs to be stabilized…either by a tripod or leaned against something to keep it from moving.

Have fun experimenting with different ways to take photos with your smartphone…without actually touching your smartphone.
