End of the School Year

The highlight of my Friday was attending Michael's (my best friend's little boy) End of Year ceremony. All the little ones were very cute, but I'm a little partial to this dino-lovin' kid. :)

Coneflower Closeup

I looked this flower up and from what I've read it looks to be a Giant Coneflower. Took this with my 100mm macro lens. I think these flowers have a really interesting look.

Carnival Ferris Wheel

I noticed on the way into the office today that a carnival had been set up, so during lunch I went back and grabbed this shot of the Ferris wheel. Also grabbed a few more shots of other rides.

Came across this cool dragonfly. It was pretty active, so I'm glad I was able to get a semi-clear shot of it.

Canoe Rentals

Saw this little place that rents canoes in Caddo Lake State Park (Map Location). Took 3 exposures and processed them with PhotoMatix. The sky is darker than I'd like, but I'm not sure how to handle that. Still a lot to learn :)

The Government Ditch

We went on a boat ride around Caddo Lake (Map Location). The guide called this "The Government Ditch". It is evidently the most photographed part of Caddo Lake, so here is another shot of it - LOL! Historically, it was dredged upstream toward Jefferson so that cotton could be shipped from Texas to New Orleans on the Red River.

Not The Only One Awake

I woke up in time for sunrise this morning on Caddo Lake (Map Location). I was lucky enough to catch something jump in the water. This is SOOC since I have limited editing tools on the road.

Mini White Blooms

We saw a ton of these on the side of the road on our way to Caddo Lake (Map Location). Since we are spending a couple of days on the lake I have nothing to edit my shots, so this is SOOC. The only thing done is a conversion from RAW to JPG.

Twin Towers

This is an acrylic cube with an engraving of the NYC skyline - pre 911. I thought I would put it on my light box to see what kind of effect it put on it. I also used Color Efex Pro to add the dual color effect.

Missing Bike

The theme this week on the 365 Project is Travel, so I found my trusty photo of my nephew’s lonely bike tire, gave it a soft sepia effect and presto, a means of travel (sorta),

Worldwide Instameet–Houston

Yesterday I attended the Worldwide Instameet in Houston. The meet up was organized by Imelda Bettinger (@Imelda) and took place at Cafe Brasil. After introductions and lunch, Mario Hernandez (@iwasframed) raffled off a cool Instagram shot on canvas. Then it was off to explore the Midtown area to take photos. It was a very fun event!

Saint Mary's Catholic Church

I had the day off this passed Thursday, so I took a day trip to the Schulenburg, Texas area. The Painted Churches seem to be the main attraction to the area, but the countryside itself is an attraction to me.

Below is a photo I took of the inside of Saint Mary's Catholic Church located at High Hill. I took 3 exposures and processed them using Photomatix Pro.

Topic – Shutter Speed

David gave a great presentation on shutter speed.

Shutter speed is basically the amount of time the shutter is open.

Exposure Triangle - ISO > Shutter Speed > Aperture

200607192012

A shutter speed below 1/60 makes it difficult to hand hold the camera - tripod becomes important.

For something like fireworks, you really need a tripod and a cable-release, so you can control the amount of time the shutter is open.

On a 70-300mm lens, you should not go under 1/300 for shutter speed.
