Missing Bike

The theme this week on the 365 Project is Travel, so I found my trusty photo of my nephew’s lonely bike tire, gave it a soft sepia effect and presto, a means of travel (sorta),

Worldwide Instameet–Houston

Yesterday I attended the Worldwide Instameet in Houston. The meet up was organized by Imelda Bettinger (@Imelda) and took place at Cafe Brasil. After introductions and lunch, Mario Hernandez (@iwasframed) raffled off a cool Instagram shot on canvas. Then it was off to explore the Midtown area to take photos. It was a very fun event!

Saint Mary's Catholic Church

I had the day off this passed Thursday, so I took a day trip to the Schulenburg, Texas area. The Painted Churches seem to be the main attraction to the area, but the countryside itself is an attraction to me.

Below is a photo I took of the inside of Saint Mary's Catholic Church located at High Hill. I took 3 exposures and processed them using Photomatix Pro.

Do Not Disturb

Playing with Instagram’s new Radial Blur feature. Ariel trying to relax, but I woke her from her six-hour slumber. Playing with Instagram and the new Radial Blur feature. Tried to keep her head in focus and the rest slightly blurred.

Lime Macro

I’ve had a pretty productive day, which is quite rare lately. After my walk this evening, I took some slices of lime and experimented with my 100mm macro lens.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography

hdr1

High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) is performed by taking two or more different exposures of the same scene and merging the photos to create a unique looking, evenly exposed photograph. Wikipedia defines HDR as a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods.

The main process is to set your camera to bracket your shots (my Nikon D90 brackets 3 shots). The bracket includes one regular + one underexposed + one overexposed shot. A tripod is pretty much required, unless you have a really stable surface to sit yout camera on.  I then take the three shots and merge/process them in PhotoMatix Pro. I am sure, I am not doing everything correctly, but I like what I see so far. There is a lot still to learn. Below I have listed some of the resources that I have run across online.

The Holga

holga

I purchased a Holga camera recently because I have been loving what I see coming from this camera online.

A Holga is basically a medium format toy camera. To me, the biggest learning curve besides loading film (which I have not done in a long time) is the lack of instant gratification. My husband laughs at me when I immediately look at the back of the camera after taking a shot, forgetting I have to wait to see what it looks like. I chalk it up to teaching me not to “chimp”.

I used up the first roll of film and sent it off to Dwayne’s Photo and got it back a couple of days ago. I have to say I was not expecting anything usable, but I think I got a couple of okay shots out of the 12 exposures.

I am hoping for a few more with the next roll. :-)

My 365 Project

Okay, I have decided to start a 365 Project, which means I take at least one photo everyday. I enjoy photography so much that I do not think I will have a problem taking one photo per day. Especially since there are so many tools that I can use on my iPhone...and that thing is with me 24/7. It will likely be an even split between my D90 and iPhone. Every now and then I will throw in a photo from my Holga (providing I learn to use it) and my husband's old Pentax Film SLR.

A Weekend to Remember Others

 z5

I spent some time at Houston National Cemetery this passed weekend. The Wreaths Across America event was on Sunday, December 19th; however, the placement of the wreaths on each and every grave occurred over the last couple of weeks. It was an awesome site to see.

I lost my Mother in 1982 and I try to visit her grave site on her birthday each year. On Monday, December 20th, she would have been 74 years old. While I was there I shot a few photos of a chapel that I have been seeing my whole life each time I go out there.

It was an emotional weekend.
