I started taking photos of shelter animals in April of 2013. At that point I had been laid off from my programming job for over a year and was looking for something to fill a void in my life. While my wonderful husband and pets do so much to keep me happy...I just felt I needed to be doing something more. Now...I'm not sure what I would do without my exposure to the shelter animals.
When I sit down to process the photos, a smile literally crosses my face and sometimes I'm so emotional, I even tear up a little. I'm happy to make these beautiful creatures shine, but at the same time I hate they are where they are.
One of the things I love to be able to capture is the unconditional love of the animals...the love between the dog or cat and the people that love them back. The shelter employees, the volunteers, the potential adopters. I have collected some of the moments I have been able to capture and presented them below.
Thank you to the ones who work tirelessly to heal, find homes and love the shelter animals. You are appreciated more than you can imagine.
I went to LCAS on Tuesday for our normal weekly photos. A few big dogs and lots of little ones. Tae the LCAS Garage cat decided to camp out on my mat, supervising me, while I took photos. Cheryl, the volunteer that helps me with photos took these photos.
I took photos at Texas AC Solutions in Dickinson on Wednesday. They have had so many dogs come in...mostly due to the recent storms, I believe.

The day was beautiful. We were headed to Kemah to meet Christy and Stacy to take some photos to celebrate their engagement. We were almost there when it hit us...there is a big run over the Kemah Bridge this morning. Needless to say Kemah was CRAZY...so we all decided to start in Seabrook and work our way back to Kemah in an hour or two. The first location was at the Cock & Bull Pub. Christy and Stacy wanted to re-trace where they met, which is kind of a neat idea. Then we went back to Kemah. It was much less crazy the second time through. We took a few photos in front of Pallapas and then proceeded to walk toward the Boardwalk stopping to take photos along the way. It got pretty toasty outside by the time we were done. Congratulations to them on their engagement!
I met Cheryl at the League City shelter on Tuesday. I took photos of about 4 dogs and was also able to stay around and get photos of our awesome Hermione going through her K-9 testing. Wednesday afternoon I headed over to Texas Animal Control Solutions in Dickinson. They have several new dogs and cats that are looking for homes. Shelter breakdown is below.
